Geometric line bands on a leg

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A leg is photographed from behind and to the side, showing a tattoo of geometric black lines made of parallel bands, chevrons and angular shapes. The bands wrap around the thigh and calf and continue down to the ankle and top of the foot. The fine, even linework is set against smooth skin, and the warm sepia tone of the photo keeps the composition simple against a plain wall and wooden floor.

The last northbound of the night has been cancelled, and you are the only one left on platform four with the signal lamp. Mrs Okonedo from the ticket office has left you the keys and a flask gone cold. The rails below run parallel as far as the lamps reach, two silver lines that never once touch, and you start counting the sleepers the way your father taught you, by the chevrons painted on the wall at the end of the bay.

For three winters the lost property office has held a leather case nobody has claimed. Inside are pencil plans for a bridge that was never built over the Calder valley, all bands and angled joints, every line running true to the next. You have tried to follow them with a fingertip on the glass, but the thing they describe loops back on itself like a bolt-hole, and each time you reach the top the chevron points you back down.

At twenty past one a freight engine comes through without stopping, its horn long and low, and the whole platform hums up through the soles of your shoes. You take the case from the shelf and set it on the bench beside the signal book. On the front you write in capitals: TO BE COLLECTED BY THE LINE. Nobody will come for it, and that seems right.

At dawn the first milk train slides in, and the driver leans out to ask whether the station is open. You say it is. You unlock the gate, and the bars of light from the lamps lie across the platform exactly where the drawings said they would, straight and parallel, one arrow pointing the way out.
