Space sleeve with astronauts and planets
Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
The sleeve shows a space scene with a large astronaut helmet at the shoulder, a glowing nebula and a ringed planet across the upper arm, and a small floating astronaut below. The lower forearm shows an astronaut standing on an orange and red desert landscape. The shading is smooth and painterly, with starfields and glowing teal and blue tones in the upper part and warm orange in the lower part.

The summer I turned fourteen, I took the boat past the old coal wharf after dark and stood up top with a torch, pointing it at nothing. Dad had taught me the constellations off the back of a cereal packet, so I knew Orion and the Plough, but above the chimneys the sky was thick with orange haze from the mills. There was one bright point that wouldn't twinkle like the rest. It sat stubbornly still while everything else turned, and I decided it was a planet, though I couldn't have proved it to anyone.
I tried to explain it to Ray the next morning over tea in tin mugs. He laughed and said the planets didn't wait for anybody. I told him that was the point. Things that stayed put were the ones you could find again.
At dawn I untied the bow line and let the boat drift toward the lock, the helmet riding on the roof and catching the first light like something that had been waiting a long time to go somewhere.
