The frost had got into the cold frame again, and Ruth knelt on the sacking with a flask of tea going cold beside her knee. Forty anemones, the red ones her mother had called widow's hats, lay flat under the glass like something that had given up. She lifted the lid an inch and the cold came in with a smell of wet slate.
