Geometric linework design on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A geometric design of angular, faceted shapes and a pointed central form is tattooed across the forearm, drawn in fine, thin outlines with dotted detailing along the upper section. The lines look pale pink and slightly raised, with redness around them, which suggests a fresh or healing tattoo, and a shiny ointment sheen covers the skin. The design is centred on the forearm, with the wrist and hand visible below and a blurred background.

The chart table in the Marisol Vane had been bolted to the bulkhead since before anyone aboard was born, and Teodora Fenn kept her dividers there the way other women keep a rosary. On the fourth day out from Falmouth the glass dropped and she laid a triangle across the paper, then another inside it, until the shape folded into a bird of sorts, long in the neck and wide in the wings. Her brother Tobias watched from the companionway with a mug going cold in his hand. He had been sick since Ushant and said nothing about it.

The bearing she wanted was not on any printed sheet. It lived in the old notebook her grandfather had kept, where he had drawn the same faceted star over and over in pencil, each one a little less steady than the last. She copied it onto the chart with a hard fine point, joining its angles to the coast of a place the Admiralty had never bothered to name. Tobias asked what the star was for. She told him it was for getting home, which was true enough, and he did not ask again.
They raised land at dusk, a low grey shelf with no lights on it. Teodora pricked the spot where two of her lines crossed and wrote the time beside it in a hand so neat it looked like print. Then she rolled the chart, tied it with tape, and dropped it through the hatch into the dark below, where her grandfather's notebook had been waiting for the same thing all along.
