Fine line dotted arc and diamond on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a fine line tattoo on the inside of a bare ankle and foot. A single thin curved line runs around the ankle, with a dotted line arcing away from it and a small outlined diamond shape hanging beneath. The linework is delicate and black, with no shading, and the background shows a rolled denim cuff and a dark leather chair.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Maud Pellow had mended nets for the Sennet fleet since before the harbour wall was built, and everyone knew she could tell a boat's luck from the knots its skipper tied. So when the Gannet did not come in on the ebb, the women came up the shingle to her door and asked her to say where it was.

She sat with the net across her knees and did not look up. "Give me the lead weight," she said, and her grandson fetched the diamond of hammered lead from the bench, the one that hung on the end of every trawl line. She turned it over. Then she took a needle and ran a thread of dots across the mesh, one for each boat still out, one for each gull that followed them, until the dots bent into a long curve like the coast road going west.

"They are past the Carrick bank," she said. "Keep the lamp lit where the road turns. Pull the thread taut and they will find the line home."

The lamp was lit. Near midnight the Gannet came round the point with her sail torn and her crew soaked, and the skipper swore it was a beacon of dots in the dark water that had drawn them in. Maud took the lead weight back and hung it on her string. Afterwards the fishwives said the old net-mender had sewn a path into the sea, and that any boat which followed a thread of dots would never be lost. That is why, on the Sennet quay, the children still wear a little lead diamond on a cord around their necks before they learn to swim.
