A feather hung from the netting strung over the Egremont Russets, caught where the wire doubled back on itself. It was white, longer than her hand, and its vane was fringed with barbs that took the late light the way frost takes a windowpane. Nobody at Hollis Farm kept birds any more. Mrs Hollis's geese had gone to the fox in April, and the orchard had been quieter since, with only the wasps and the odd tractor on the lane.

She climbed three rungs and freed it with two fingers. Dan looked up from the crates and told her to leave it where it was, that it was bad luck to take anything from a row before the pick was in. She told him the geese had been called Penny and that Penny had once stood on his boot for an entire afternoon. He laughed, the first real laugh she'd had from him all week, and said nothing more about luck.

Back at the cart she pressed the quill against the inside of her wrist, where the shaft left a cool, raised line on her skin. A wasp drifted over, considered the apple juice on her thumb, and lifted away towards the hedge without landing.
