Geometric lion head design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A lion's head is drawn in profile, partly divided by a single vertical line running down the right side. The mane and face are built from angular, faceted black outlines, with the shadowed areas filled in stippled dots. The drawing is in black ink on off-white paper, placed on a wooden surface, with the design filling most of the frame.

The lion came down the stairwell of Harrow Court the week the lift finally died, and nobody on the fourth floor was surprised, because Mrs Okafor had been saying for a month that something big was living behind the bin store. Its mane was made of slate-coloured shards, every edge sharp enough to catch a coat, and where the light from the landing window fell on it the dark dots of its shadow seemed to hum.

The council man came up with his clipboard and stood on the half-landing with his mouth open. The lion looked at him with one eye, the other turned away into the grey wall as if that half of the building was no concern of its. Then it asked him, in a voice like a drawer sliding shut, how many years he had spent measuring other people's staircases. He said he had lost count. The lion said that was the answer it wanted, and went back down to the bin store to sleep.
In the morning the vertical line that ran down the middle of the stairwell, the crack that had split the plaster since the seventies, had been drawn straight and true from the ground floor to the roof. Nobody could say who had done it. Mrs Okafor said it was the lion, that it had walked the line with its shadow the way a tailor walks a hem. The council man signed off the repair without reading the form, and the lift, when it finally came back, never once stopped between floors.
