Ornamental wolf head design sketch with hamsa hand
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a wolf head built from ornamental panels, filigree arches and a hamsa hand over the muzzle and eye. Fine, sketchy linework with light shading defines the eyes, nose and pattern details, and hatching adds tone to the forehead and cheek. The image is greyscale and fills the page, with construction lines and faint guide marks still visible around the outline.

Mind the gap, she says, though nobody has asked her to, and the ticket man at Carrowmere pretends not to hear. Sit down, love, the eleven-forty is never on time and the wolf will keep till then.

The wolf came up the Settle line in a crate marked for a stonemason in Leeds, the spring the old signal box burned. Inside was a carved panel, an arch of pierced iron like the gate of a bathhouse in some hot foreign town, and in its middle a wolf's head with a hand laid over the muzzle, palm out, to stop it speaking. Nobody in the village could say who had cut it. The stationmaster's wife swore there was a triangle for each of the seven bells that used to ring at the crossing, and that the left eye looked along the north platform while the right one watched the way out.
Here is what they say happened next. A girl called Hannah Dyer, who sold pies from a tray, climbed the ladder to hang the panel above the booking hall and found a gap in the middle finger of the hand. She put her own finger through it, out of spite or luck, and the whole iron thing swung on its hinge like a door. Behind it was a platform nobody had ever mapped, with a train waiting, its windows full of faces that were not in any timetable.
She did not get on. She stayed, and she turned the wolf's outward eye to face the line, and every night since, the trains from the north have come in exactly when they should.
