Geometric lion head on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A stylised lion head made of angular, faceted planes sits centrally on the arm, with a broad mane of diagonal black and teal bands behind it. The face is filled in teal and blue with a grainy, textured finish, with amber eyes and a dark red nose, and the outlines are defined by black shapes. The background is softly blurred, keeping the focus on the tattoo.

Sit closer, the lamps are being lit along the canal and I never tell this one to a crowd that might leave early. You want to know about the lion of Pellow Street. Nobody in this city has seen a real lion, only the stone pair outside the bank, and those have been painted over so many times they look like wet cheese. But the old glassmaker on Tanner's Row swore the beast came down from the cranes one winter, when the fog was thick enough to swallow a tram.

It came down in pieces, he said. Not flesh, not fur, but planes of blue and green, sharp as broken window panes, stacking themselves into a head that turned and looked at the lamplighters with eyes the colour of tea left too long in the pot. Where its mane should have been there were slats of teal and black, like shutters pulled across the night, and every time a bell rang in the cathedral one of them slid a little further down.
Now the glassmaker had a daughter, Marit, who could not sleep for the hum of the furnaces. She walked the river each night with a tin lantern, and on the third night she found the lion sitting on the lock gates, cleaning its grainy face with one paw. She did not run. She asked it what it wanted. It said nothing, only lowered its great faceted head so she could see her own reflection in the amber of its eyes, small and lit and unafraid.
Morning came grey and ordinary. The lion was gone, the lock gates were wet, and Marit's lantern had gone out. But ask anyone on Tanner's Row and they will show you the shutter-slats of cloud over the water, the same blue and teal, and they will tell you that if you stand still at the right corner of the bridge, something looks back at you and decides you can be trusted with the night.
