Geometric wolf head on a leg
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf head is built from angular black lines and panels, with the eyes, nose and muzzle shaped from geometric segments. Solid black fills sit against fine parallel hatching and open skin, giving contrast and depth. The design is in black ink only and is centred on the outer leg with thin straight lines extending beyond the head.

The lamp in the signal box at Hollin Cross had been flickering since the 10.40 went through, and Nell Garrod watched the board instead of the rain. Coloured lamps threw hard shadows across the floor. Her uncle had drawn the junction on squared paper in 1961, every track a ruled line and every point a sharp angle, and she had learnt to read the layout the way other people read faces.

The wolf came down the embankment on the third night of the storm, following the cutting where the rails ran out past the sidings. She saw it first as a block of black in the gate lamp, then as panels: a pointed ear, a dark wedge of muzzle, a pale plate of throat. It stood at the crossing and did not blink. Nell did not move either. She had been told the line was quiet, never that it was empty.
She took the squared paper from the drawer and, with the lamp held steady, traced the outline in pencil, running straight lines out from the head the way her uncle had run his points, past the edge of the sheet toward the signal arms. When she looked up the wolf had turned its head, and the gate lamp showed the far road was clear.
The 2.15 freight went through at a walk. By six the gate was shut, the wolf was gone, and her relief was stamping snow off his boots on the step. Nell pinned the drawing above the levers and said only that the points had held. Beyond the sidings, the lines she had drawn still ran out past the edge of the map, and she left them that way.
