Geometric lion on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A stylised lion head faces forward, built from angular orange, red and yellow shapes with dark outlines. Behind it, blue swirling waves and small star-like marks fill a rounded area. The solid, flat colour fills and the bold geometric shapes give the piece a graphic look, and the circular design sits neatly in the middle of the forearm.

Dear Tomas,

The rain has come in sideways again, so the Saturday market at Harbour Yard is mostly puddles and people hurrying past my stall without looking up. Mum sends her love and says you are to wear the wool hat I posted. I have sold four lanterns this week, all tin, all painted by old Mr Deacon before his hands went. The one he kept back for himself sits on the shelf above the till: a lion, orange as a dropped marigold, its face cut into hard flat shapes like a folded paper crown, and behind its mane a whorl of blue water with little white stars caught in the swell.

A woman bought it on Thursday, the one with the green umbrella who always asks the price twice. She said she had seen the same lion on a ship's bell in Porto and wanted to know who had painted it. I told her I had no idea, which is true. Mr Deacon never signed anything. He said a lion has no need to know whose name is on it.

She stood there in the drip a long time, turning the lantern so the light caught the waves. Then she said she would take it, but only if I let her pay with the coins her father had brought back from Lisbon, because the lion had looked at her, and she could not walk past a thing that looked back.

I gave her the change in the wrong coins. She did not notice, and I have decided not to mention it to her.

Love, Ada
