Geometric lotus with circles design
Geometric · Mixed · Flash
A drawn tattoo design of a lotus flower built from layered teardrop and petal shapes, with concentric circles stacked along a central vertical line. The outlines are inked in black with some shading and overlapping petal edges, and the lines are precise and symmetrical. Soft green and blue coloured pencil washes drift behind the motif on a cream sheet of paper.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the fire doesn't take your eyebrows. Now. Beyond Hollin Wood, where the path gives up and turns to reed, there was a mere that nobody in Ashcombe would fish, because the water in it had no bottom anybody had found. Old Maud Tennant went out to it anyway, the summer her husband drowned, with a plumb line of knotted cord and a bag of river stones.

She dropped a stone for every fathom and tied a ring of bone onto the cord at each one, so she could count them back. Ring after ring slid down into the green. The mist came up off the water the way it does, thin and blue at the edges, and the reeds leaned in to listen. By the ninth ring she had stopped counting aloud. By the twelfth the cord ran out of her fingers and did not stop.
Here's the part the carters tell wrong. She didn't pull the line up. She sat on the bank with the last ring in her palm and waited for the water to tell her what it was keeping, and at first light a lotus came up out of the mere, all teardrop petals and nested rings, standing straight on its own stem as if someone had drawn it with a rule. Every ring on the cord had a flower sitting in it, small as a button, and the whole stem glowed green from beneath.
Maud never went back for the cord. The bone rings are still on the bank, if you know where the reeds part. Count them, and you'll find there's always one more than you dropped.
