The surveyor's daughter had counted the stars from the bridge at Carrow every night for a month, and every night the number came out different. She wrote them in a ledger with a stub of pencil, dot by dot, until the paper looked like frost. Her father said the sky was not a ledger and she should stop. She said the sky was exactly a ledger, only nobody had kept the books properly.

On the last night of the autumn fair, a woman in a grey coat sold her a folding brass compass for a penny and a promise to bring it back. The compass pointed at nothing useful. Instead it turned slowly towards the two pale crescents rising over the water-meadows, one low by the reeds and one already high, and held there, trembling, as if it were waiting for a sum to finish.

She followed it past the shuttered stalls and the cold dodgems, up the lane to a field where a lotus had been painted onto a wagon door in faceted greys, each petal cut like a cut stone. Inside the wagon the woman was waiting with the ledger she had been keeping too. She opened it. Every page held the same line in her own careful hand: the moon is always two moons when you are looking the right way.

The girl went home before dawn with the compass in her pocket. It still pointed at the moons, but when she finally looked up from the bridge, only one of them was there, sitting in the lotus of the sky like a lamp left on for her.
