Geometric mandala back piece

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person's upper back and shoulders are covered by a large symmetrical tattoo of interlocking geometric mandala forms, with star motifs and layered arches. The design is built from fine lines and dense dot and line fill, creating a lace-like texture. The image is black and white, with the subject's dark hair pulled up and a hand visible at the top left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dearest Tamsin, the dome at Qasr Imri is finished at last, and you would not believe the quarrel it cost us. Master Haddad wanted the eight-pointed stars set where the arches meet, and the masons swore the plaster would crack under the weight of so many compass points. I held the cord myself while the old man pricked each centre with an awl, a dot at a time, until the ceiling looked like frost on a window.

The pattern is not hard to read once you stop chasing single lines. Every ring turns into the next, and every arch answers the one beside it, so a mistake in one corner would travel the whole way round and out the other side. I found that out on the third morning, when a stray thumb slipped and a six-pointed star came out with five points. Haddad did not shout. He sat under the scaffold with his tea going cold and said, 'Then the lamp will have to fall on the flaw and call it the sun.'

So we lay the work by lamplight every evening, dot by dot, and the lines filled in around the error like water finding its level. By the last week the flaw was hidden inside a rosette no one looks at but me. I have decided to keep quiet about it, as Haddad told me to, and let the whole dome go on being perfect in the way only a thing with one secret in it can be.

Come in spring if the roads are dry. Bring the good ink, the black from the soot of the olive lamps, and tell your brother that the stars he asked for are on the ceiling now, all of them pointing at the place where he used to sit. Your loving sister, Nell.
