Ornate mandala tattoo across neck and upper back
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A large symmetrical mandala design runs from the nape of the neck down across the upper back, built from fine black linework with scrolls, paisley-like petals and lace-like borders. The lines are even and crisp, with some stippled dot texture along the neck area, and the design sits on pale skin against a warm, softly lit room.

The lace-maker of Hollin Cross had a daughter who could not sit still, so her mother gave her a needle and a pattern book and told her to keep her hands busy until the bells rang for supper. The girl worked the pattern out in ink instead, on a square of linen pinned to the kitchen wall, and every evening the petals grew a little larger and the scrolls curled a little tighter, until the whole village came in to look at them before they went to bed.

One winter the miller's wife asked whether the design could be carried on a living back, so that it would always be near the one who wore it. The girl said she would need the right skin for it, and a whole year. She walked the valley road for eleven months, asking at every door for a clean pair of hands and a steady one, and nobody could agree on either. At the end of the year she came home with her own neck bare and her pattern folded in her apron, and she found the linen gone from the wall, taken down by her mother to wrap the bread.
The girl did not weep. She sat by the cold hearth and drew the mandala again, from memory, starting at the nape where the first petal always began, and she drew it so carefully that the lines never once crossed. When her mother came in with the lamp, the girl was already tracing the lace border down her own shoulder blade with a finger, and the old woman saw that the pattern had found its way home without anyone's help.
