Geometric mandala chest tattoo

Geometric · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A selfie-style photograph of a woman wearing a black bralette and denim shorts, with a tattoo across her chest below the neckline. The design is a symmetrical ornamental mandala with scalloped and triangular panels, a central lotus-like motif and a dangling drop at the bottom. The bold black linework and solid fills are in black and grey, and the tattoo is the clear focus of the framing.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fanlight over the front door had split along its lotus, and Dorrie Vane knew the sea wind would find the gap before the breakfast guests were up. She fetched the stepladder from under the stairs, a tin of putty and the small brass cutters her father had left in the dresser drawer, and set to work while the gulls argued over the bins in the yard.

The glass had been her father's pride. He had cut it in 1911 from offcuts left by a chapel glazier in Ramsgate, so that the scalloped border ran round like the edge of a paper doily, the triangles stood up like a row of teeth, and the centre opened into a lotus with petals of pale green and smoke grey. Beneath it hung a little brass drop, the sort a lady might wear on a chain. Her mother used to say it was the only thing in the house that never needed dusting, because the damp had given up on it years ago.

When she eased the broken petal out, a square of paper slid from the lead channel and fell onto the step. It was folded small and smelled of salt. Inside was a tide table for the summer of 1938, and beside the Thursday spring tide someone had written in pencil, in a hand she did not recognise, *Meet me at the low wall. Bring the key.*

Dorrie stood with the paper in one hand and the cutters in the other, and the morning light came through the glass onto the hall floor in a wheel of green and grey. She pressed the petal back into its groove, dabbed the putty smooth with her thumb, and left the little brass drop swinging where it had always hung.
