Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The image is cropped from the neck to the waist and shows a woman holding her hand near her chest. The tattoo on her hand is a dense geometric pattern of solid black lines, and dark tattooed patterns continue up her forearm and upper arm. The ink is entirely black and grey against tanned skin, with the subject filling most of the frame.

The rain had been coming sideways since six, and the canvas over Oskar's stall sagged like a wet sail. You were counting offcuts into a biscuit tin when the old woman with the green umbrella asked whether you could cut a pattern that never repeated.

You told her nothing could go on forever on a finite sheet of slate. She laughed, set a square of card on the trestle, folded it into eight and cut it with a craft knife in four quick strokes. Each cut opened into a star, then a lattice, then something like a window with the light coming through. "Count the points," she said. You counted until the rain stopped being noise.

All afternoon you worked the slate on the wet saw, following her folds, and by dusk you had a tile of nineteen pieces that locked together without glue. She paid in coins from a purse full of buttons and left without asking your name. Oskar lifted the tile toward the bulbs, and the shadow it threw on the back wall was perfectly still.

You kept the card. Years later, when the market had moved to the car park and the rain came again, you unfolded it on your kitchen table and found one point of the star left blank, the exact width of a button, pressed through from the other side.
