Geometric circles and triangles on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a symmetrical geometric design of overlapping circles and triangles arranged inside a six-pointed ring, with a central triangle and circle. The outlines are crisp and the fills are built from dense stippled dots that fade from dark to light across the shapes. The design is in black ink and greys, photographed straight on against a plain skin background with the thigh filling most of the frame.

Tobias had been on his knees since first light, pressing box cuttings into the chalk dots that Lady Ferrers had marked across the lawn. Forty-one of them, she had said, and not one more, because the pattern was copied from a drawing her husband made in Venice before the fever took him. She would not explain the triangles that ran through the circles like fingers through a glove. She only tapped the surveyor's cord with her parasol and said the shadows must agree at noon.

The dots were the hard part. Her husband had shaded every shape with stipple, so the rim of each circle faded to bare turf and the heart of it was dark with pinpricks. Tobias worked them with a bradawl, a hundred strokes to a ring, and by the second ring his wrists ached. The village lads watched from the glasshouse wall and joked that he had been hired to count sand.
On the sixth ring he laid the cord from one outer circle to the opposite one and found it ran exactly the length of the drive. Every line in the drawing had been measured against the house, and the empty central circle, which he had assumed was for a fountain, sat square on the spot where a sundial's stone would stand. He went up to the terrace with mud to his elbows and said so. Lady Ferrers only nodded and went back to her letters.
At midsummer the sun cleared the yew hedge at twelve precisely. The triangle's shadow fell across the lawn and touched the empty centre, and Tobias, who had planted every dot himself, stood on the spot and found the shade cool on his boots.
