Fine line geometric pattern on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line tattoo covers the forearm with interlocking geometric shapes, spirals, diamonds and scattered dots that trail down toward the wrist. The linework is thin and consistent, in black ink on skin, with no shading. The photograph is in black and white and frames the forearm diagonally, with the design fading out toward the lower edge of the image.

The stamp rolled the wrong way again, and Ilse swore into the cold coffee. Her grandfather's drafting table had been bolted to the workshop wall since before the flood, and every pattern pinned to it was a grid of lines that refused to meet where they should. She traced the spiral with the nib of a pen, counting the turns the way he had taught her: one for the sea, one for the wind, one for the thing you forgot to ask. The diamonds were easy. The dots were the hard part, because each one was a place where a line had to decide whether to keep going.

By midnight the spiral would not close. She tried it on the back of a receipt, then on the sleeve of her coat, then on the bare inside of her wrist, where the ink wouldn't smear if she was careful. The pattern ran toward her hand and stopped a finger short, like a train that knew the last station was gone. Her grandfather had said a pattern that stopped was a pattern that was waiting for something. He had never said what.

She drew one more diamond, small as a fingernail, and the spiral closed with a sound she felt in her teeth. The lamp hummed. Outside, the harbour bell rang twice for the tide, and somewhere a gull complained about the dark. Ilse pressed the stamp to the paper, lifted it, and watched the whole shape come away clean, every line exactly where he would have put it.
