Geometric origami birds on the ankle
Geometric · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a column of geometric origami-style birds, drawn in thin black lines with angular facets, stacked down the outer lower leg near the ankle. Soft watercolour washes in orange, blue, teal and pink sit behind and between the birds, with the linework left mostly unshaded. A small copper coin rests beside the design for scale, and the photo is taken from a close angle against plain skin.

Dear Marta, the ferry didn't come again today, so I sat on the harbour wall with the tin of paper you posted and folded the whole afternoon into birds. Mr Okonedo at the shop swears the sheets came from Kyoto, though he says that about everything. Mostly I made cranes, the way Grandmother taught us, but my hands kept making sharper creases, corners you would never have let a child get away with.

The island has forty-one houses and one tap that runs brown after rain. Every evening a gull lands on the same iron bollard and watches me, and I have started calling it the inspector. Yesterday I set a row of finished birds along the wall, smallest at the bottom, and a gust took the lowest one clean off the stone. It skated into the shallows and sat there, its edges softened pink by the tide, and I laughed out loud for the first time since the funeral.
I waded out for it. The water was the colour of weak tea over sand, but where the sun caught it there were streaks of teal and a blue like the pen you used for birthday cards. I dried the bird on my skirt and it held its shape, every fold still sharp. I think I finally understand what you meant about making something that has to hold its own weight.
The ferry is due Thursday. I am sending you the bird that fell in the sea, and the others I have left stacked on the wall for whoever comes next. Tell Dad the tin is nearly empty, but the gull has stopped watching me and started eating the crumbs. Love, Ines.
