Geometric parrot on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A parrot perches side on, facing left, with a black outline and a faceted pattern of straight-edged panels. The panels blend from yellow on the head and chest to teal and green on the wings and tail. The bird is shown against dark, glossy surroundings, with a faint pale drawing at the top edge of the frame.

Dear Tomasz,

The Hallworth window is finished, and I have forgiven you for the cracked sea-green panel, though not for the lie about the kiln. Mrs Pryce wanted her parrot brought down from the old almanac, the one her grandfather bought off a sailor in Bristol, and she was adamant it should not look like a painting. So I broke the bird into facets, the way you break a bread roll for a dog, and let the yellow of the head run down into the teal without a single curve to soften it.
You asked why I didn't just draw a bird and lead it. Because a curve lies about light. Straight edges tell the truth about where the sun hits, and where it doesn't. I cut each shard with the grozing iron until the edges sat square, then set them into the lead came one by one while the orchard light came through the open workshop door, all windfalls and wasps.
On the last afternoon a boy from the cider farm leaned on the bench and asked if the bird was going to fly out. I told him it was waiting for the bench to be cleared. He didn't laugh. He just nodded and went to fetch the apples we'd promised the glazing crew, and when he came back the light had moved and the teal panels had caught it, throwing green across the floor as if something had been let loose.
Come up at the weekend and see it. Bring the good solder.
Love, Edith
