A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Margit had laid tiles for thirty-one years and never once been asked to make a diamond bend. The client, a retired dentist called Mr Lowther, wanted a conservatory floor in Bath stone and slate, but he wanted it to look like the rind of a fruit he had seen on a trip to Madeira. "It must wrap," he said, cupping his hands around an invisible globe. "Every diamond leaning toward the middle."

She drew it on the screed with a carpenter's pencil and a length of string. The trick, she found, was to stop thinking of the floor as flat. Each slate had to be cut a fraction narrower at the top, so that the lattice would tighten as it climbed toward the crown of the room. By the third week the floor looked less like a floor and more like something that might breathe if you stood on it long enough.

On the last Friday, Mr Lowther brought his granddaughter to see. She counted the diamonds out loud, lost her place near the doorway, and started again with her finger hovering over each one. "There are too many," she said. "No, there are exactly enough," Margit told her, and found she meant it. Every gap had been measured to the width of a fingernail.

Mr Lowther stood at the glass wall for a long time afterwards, looking out at a garden where real fruit would never ripen in English weather. "Now it's a pineapple that stayed indoors," he said. Margit rolled her string up neatly and left him the pencil.
