Pineapple outline design
Black and grey · Flash
A simple black line drawing of a whole pineapple, showing its spiky crown of leaves and a body covered in a lattice of diamond shapes. The linework is even and uncoloured, with no shading, set against a flat grey background. The pineapple sits centred and fills most of the frame vertically.

The stove in the pinery had gone cold again by the time Ada Pell reached the door, and the glass smelled of scorched sugar and wet soil. Mr Harcourt stood among the pits with his hat in his hands, looking at the fruit as though it had insulted him. Three crowns had split at the base in the night. Ada knelt, pressed a thumb to the nearest lattice of skin, and felt it give like a cold loaf.

'It was the heating,' she said. 'Not the fruit.' He didn't answer. The estate had lost its last boiler man to the war a year ago, yet the family still wanted pineapples on the table for the harvest dinner, the way they had in their grandfather's day, when one fruit was worth a month's wages to a labourer and was carried in on a silver salver to be admired more than eaten. Ada had spent three weeks learning to read the diamonds, how each one lifted when the fruit was ready, how the crown turned from green to gold along its spines.
On the last evening of August she carried the best of the surviving fruit up the gravel path herself, wrapped in flannel, its crown stiff against her elbow. The dining room windows were lit and somebody laughed inside. She set the pineapple on the sideboard beside the sauce boats and stood a moment longer than she should, because in the lamplight the lattice threw a pattern of small dark diamonds across the white cloth, exactly the shape she had been sketching on the backs of seed packets since June.
Harcourt came in behind her, saw the fruit, and said nothing for a while. Then he took a knife from the sideboard, cut the first slice, and handed her the crown. 'Plant it,' he said. 'Properly this time. Your name goes on the pit card.' She turned the leaves in her hands and found the base was already showing white roots.
