Stylised lotus line design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical lotus flower built from layered pointed petals, with curled scrolls and paisley-style leaves spreading out on either side. The linework is fine and even, filled with internal hatching and small decorative dots, and it is rendered entirely in black outline. The design is centred on a plain white background with small circles scattered above and at the sides.

The radiator had boiled dry forty miles before the Sabkha turn, and I was sitting on the sump guard of the van, watching heat shake off the road like water, when the old woman came walking out of the haze with a tin bucket on her hip.

Her stall was a lean-to of corrugated sheet beside a dead well, hung with lamps and trays beaten flat. Every piece carried the same pattern: a lotus with pointed petals stacked like a flame, paisley leaves curling outward, scrolls that ended in tiny rings. She filled my radiator a cupful at a time and would not let me pay until I had tapped one tray with my thumbnail and heard it ring true. "Mind the dots," she said. "That is where the water goes in."

I asked why a lotus, out here where nothing opens. She laughed and said her husband had cut the first one the year the well failed. He had cut it to be looked at, not drunk from. She had kept cutting them for nineteen years since. The petals were fiddly, the hatching slow, and every line had to be even, or the light would show the flaw at dusk.

I drove off with a lamp wrapped in my jacket. At the next ridge I stopped and held it up to the low sun. The shadow of the lotus fell across the road in perfect symmetry, its scrolls stretching over the gravel as if they meant to reach a river, and for the length of one breath the desert looked like it had been waiting all along to be drawn on.
