Geometric rabbit on the ribs
Geometric · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A small rabbit is built from angular facets, shown in profile with its ears and body split into triangular planes. The faceted shapes are filled with soft gradients in orange, red, teal and black, giving a sense of depth. The tattoo sits alone in the centre of a pale torso against a brick wall, with plenty of clear skin around it.

Dear Nell, don't open the envelope on the stairs, the hare won't survive the draught. I folded it at the back of the sign shop on Hollin Lane at two this morning, after the last tram had gone and the street was quiet enough to hear the sodium lamps buzz. Mr Okafor leaves his offcuts of acetate in a crate by the cutting table: orange, teal, and a black that goes nearly to ink when you hold it up to the light. I took a handful home in my coat.

You'll remember how Dad used to fold rabbits from the Radio Times for us, with the ears always lopsided. This one has no lopsided ears. Every edge is a plane somebody decided on. I kept watching the light from the pelican crossing catch the cut side and turn it red, then teal, then nothing at all, so I tried to make the hare hold all of that at once.
At half four a police car slowed beside me while I was kneeling on the kerb. The officer asked what I was doing. I said I was matching colours. He looked at the acetate, then at the hare balanced on my knee, and said he'd never been told a rabbit could be that sharp. Then he drove on, slowly, the way you'd leave something you didn't quite trust.
I've left the last facet bare on purpose. Paint it yourself, or don't. Post it back when you're done and I'll know which corner you chose. Love, Ruth.
