Origami birds on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Two folded paper style birds are drawn with bold black geometric outlines, one smaller and angled upward, the other larger and angled across it. The fills are soft watercolour washes of teal, blue, pink and yellow that bleed beyond the lines in places. The tattoo sits on the outer upper arm against a plain pale background.

The last sheet of manifest paper had been folded so many times its creases had gone soft as cloth. Mira smoothed it on the workbench in the hydroponic bay, where the lamps hummed at their dawn setting and the algae vats threw green light across the ceiling. Her grandmother had folded birds from the same stock, back when the paper still came in reams and nobody on Halden's Reach thought of it as rationed.

The inspector came down the spine at third shift with a clipboard and a face like a sealed hatch. "Pulp allocation is frozen," he said. "Anything off the ledger goes to recycling." Mira did not argue. She folded the sheet into a bird with a long straight neck, then a smaller one from the scraps on the cutting table, and dipped a brush into the vat run-off, where the dye bled out pink, teal and yellow. She let the colour soak into the paper edges until it looked like weather.

When the inspector turned his back, she slid the birds into the return vent, where the air ran hard towards the scrubbers and then up the old ventilation shafts to the observation dome. Nobody had opened the dome since the ship left its last port. The glass was grey with dust. Still the draught took the birds, tipped them, and carried them up out of sight.

Two days later a maintenance crew reported a fine colour on the dome's inner pane, a smear of blue and rose where someone had wiped a clean patch in the dust. Mira never went up to see it. She kept the ledger in order and her hands busy, and when the lamps dimmed to night she looked at the ceiling and imagined the birds circling the stars, turning only where the light was.
