Geometric ram head on upper back

Geometric · Back · Colour · Photo

A ram's head with curled horns is tattooed centrally on the upper back, with the face of the wearer not shown. The head is built from faceted, angular panels filled with pink, red, purple, blue and teal, with lighter areas suggesting facial features. The clean outline and bold blocks of colour sit against smooth skin and a dark hairline at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Holloway left the ram until last, after the saints and the fishermen, because he said nobody in Calder Vale ever looked at a beast in a church. He was wrong. For forty years the congregation of St Ninian's turned in their pews to find the ram in the south window, its horns curling in leaded spirals, its face cut into angled panes of rose and violet and teal that threw colour across the hymn books every afternoon in October.

I was nineteen when he let me cut the blue. I had swept offcuts for two summers, learning to read the grain of the glass the way my father read weather, and I kept my hand steady by counting under my breath. Teal is a cruel colour to work with. It wants to shatter along a line you never drew. Holloway stood behind me with his pipe unlit and said nothing, which was how I knew I had got it right.

The storm came the February I turned twenty-six. A slate came off the roof and took out three panes, the blue among them, and the parish council spent a month deciding whether a ram was worth the price of a scaffold. In the end they only had money for the scaffold. Nobody asked whether I still had the offcuts. I had kept every scrap in a biscuit tin under my bench, because a glazier never throws away a colour he might need.

I cut the new blue on a Tuesday, sitting in the cold transept with the old panes stacked beside me like playing cards. When I fitted it into the lead the sun came round at four, as it always did, and the ram looked down at the pews with one eye lit teal and the other still dark. Someone at the back said, very quietly, that it looked like him again. I did not tell her I had only mended the glass, not the beast, and that the difference was all in the light.
