Geometric bear on the upper back

Geometric · Back · Mixed · Photo

A geometric bear is tattooed on the upper back, facing left, and its body is built from angular polygonal facets. The shading moves from dark navy and black at the edges to lighter lilac, pink and pale blue inside the shapes, with fine stippled texture in places. The subject is photographed from behind against a plain cream wall, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The surveyor's boy had been sent up the Kestle valley with a chain, a compass and a tin of ink that froze if you left it on the sill, and by the third week he had stopped trusting the land. Every ridge looked wrong in the morning. Every ridge had shifted by dusk, its edges cut sharper than before, as though someone up there was folding paper and forgetting to unfold it.

On the ninth night he saw the bear. It stood on the far slope where no bear could stand, a shape built from flat planes of slate and lilac light, its shoulder a hard blue wedge, its belly washed the pale colour of sky just before snow. Where the planes met, the dark ran into the rose of the cloud, and stars sat in it like grit pressed into wet paint. He sketched it with a stub of charcoal, nine lines and a dozen angles, and when he looked up again the ridge was only a ridge.

Old Marta at the inn laughed at him over her soup. The bear was no secret, she said. It walked the high country once a generation, and every surveyor who drew it made his map a little truer and his wife a little lonelier. Ask the mountain for a number, she said, and it gives you an angle. Ask it for a path and it will walk you round in a circle the rest of your life.

He went back up with his chain and wrote nothing down. He stood where the bear had stood and let the light change through its shapes until the dark planes settled into a line he could walk. At the bottom of the valley he found a spring, cold as a coin, and his own tracks leading away from it. The chart he made that winter has one blank square in it, shaded in navy and rose, and the clerks in town have never agreed on what to call it.
