Fox, flowers and bird on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed fox head faces forward at the centre of the design, with pointed ears and shaded fur. Clusters of open blossoms, leaves and small sprigs frame the fox, and a small songbird with fern or pine fronds sits in the lower right. The linework is fine and sketch-like with soft shading, shown in black ink on a bare back with the shoulder and hair visible at the edges.

The last northbound train leaves at twenty past eleven, and by midnight you are the only person left on Carrow Road platform who has not gone home. You are sorting the lost-property shelf in the ticket office, separating umbrellas from walking sticks, when the fox walks in through the open shutter as though it keeps a timetable of its own. Its coat is the grey of wet slate, and the tip of each ear looks sharp enough to cut paper.

It sits by the radiator and watches you with the patience of someone who has missed many trains. Tucked under its chin, in a fold of tissue paper, is a sprig of cherry blossom, pale and slightly crushed. You know that blossom. It grows on the embankment behind the old goods yard, where nobody has pruned since the freight lines closed. You take the sprig in both hands. The fox lifts its head and waits for you to understand.
So you follow it, past the bicycle racks and down the steps to the disused platform, where ferns have pushed up through the cracks like handwriting nobody bothered to rub out. A small brown bird is perched on the fence post, singing as if the station were a hedge. The fox stops beneath the old timetable board, where a place name is still painted in faded cream, a town none of the trains have stopped at for years.
You set the blossom on the sill of the lamp post. The fox does not look back. It slips out through the gap in the fence, the bird lifts after it, and for a moment the whole platform smells of rain and something green. In the morning the blossom is gone, and the lost-property ledger has a new line in your handwriting that you do not remember writing: one fox, returned to the hedge.
