Geometric bird tattoo on upper back
Geometric · Back · Colour · Photo
Two photographs show the same tattoo: a close view of the skin and a wider view of a woman seen from behind with her hair in a bun. The design is a bird perched on a stylised stem, with the body and tail made from overlapping triangular and polygonal facets in purple, red, orange, green and blue. The shapes are filled with solid colour and crisp edges, and the tattoo sits centrally on the upper back, with the bird facing right.

The offcut was the size of a dinner plate, and Ada had been turning it under the bench lamp since the last bus left Wicker Street. Purple first, then a sliver of orange where the old kiln had streaked it. Her father would have swept it into the cullet bin without a second look. She kept it anyway, because the scrap of a wing always looked like a bird still deciding which way to face.

The commission had come from the children's ward at St Jude's, where a boy called Teddy had drawn a bird on a stick with a striped tail and asked the glazier to make it shine. Ada spent three weeks breaking his drawing into facets, each one a triangle small enough to hold between finger and thumb. Red for the breast. Teal for the tail, cut so thin that the light came through it like a held breath. The night sister rang at two in the morning to ask whether the panel could hang by Thursday, and Ada said yes before she had finished thinking.
On Thursday she stood in the corridor while the porters fixed the brackets, and the sun came in low through the new window. The coloured shadows slid across the linoleum, over the trolleys and the sleeping chair, and climbed the wall to the bed where Teddy was propped up with a juice carton. He pointed at the floor, where a purple wing lay across his slippers. Ada knelt beside him and told him the bird had come down to see who was awake. He nodded as though that was exactly the arrangement he had hoped for.
