Geometric skull with rose crown on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A skull wearing a crown of pink roses is tattooed on the upper thigh of a person in denim shorts. The skull is built from fine black lines forming a triangular mesh, and the facets are filled with soft pastel pink, peach, green and blue. The design is centred on pale skin against a plain light background.

The survey drone had mapped the crater three times before Dorrit admitted the ridge looked like a brow. We were forty days out from Calder Station, the hull hummed at a pitch I had stopped hearing, and the only fresh thing aboard was the rose bed under the greenhouse lamps. She pinned the scan to the galley wall and drew over it with a grease pencil, joining each hollow to the next until a triangular mesh sat on the rock like lace.

Everyone said the skull was morbid. I thought it was tidy. Every facet of that mesh was a fact: a fracture line, a pressure seam, a basin where ice had once sat. Dorrit filled them in with colour from the paint kit, pink for the old lava, peach for the scorched rims, green where the lichen analogue grew in the lee of the ridges. When she finished, the crater wore a crown of roses she had sketched from the greenhouse bed, petal by petal, though nothing on that moon had ever bloomed.
The turn came in the sensor logs. Three days before the pale light blinked out, the drone had recorded a faint warmth in the basin under the skull's left eye. Dorrit set the grease pencil down and said, 'Something's still breathing down there.' I asked whether we should go and look. She shook her head and drew one more line, a clean black edge from the crown to the jaw, closing the mesh.
We never went. The mission report calls the crater Site Nine and lists the triangulation as complete. But the scan still hangs in the galley, and when the lamps dim at night I can see the pink facets glow where the warm basin sits. I tell myself it is only the roses catching the light.
