Sugar skull with roses and diamond on thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A sugar skull is tattooed on the side of a thigh, with a diamond above the eyes, roses filling both eye sockets, and flowers around the crown and jaw. The linework is bold and dark, with grey shading that gives the skull and petals depth. The skull sits centrally in the frame, with a red top and black shorts at the top edge and a hand resting on the left.

Dear Ines,

The big top came down in Shrewsbury on Tuesday, and Mr Halloran has sold the elephant to a farm near Lancaster, which I suppose is the closest thing to a happy ending this season will get. What's left of us is three wagons, a generator that coughs like a smoker, and the painted skull on the side of the ticket van. You remember Maria painted that. She did the roses in the eye sockets the summer before she left, and she said the diamond on the brow was there so the skull would always have something to look up at.
Last night the rain got under the tarpaulin and the paint ran. The roses bled into the bone so the eyes looked like they were weeping red. Pieter stood in the mud with a bucket and said we should paint over it and call it a fresh start, but I told him a skull that has lost its face is worse than one that is only a little shabby. We stayed up until two touching it up with a fine brush and a jar of lamp black, going over every petal the way she taught us.
The new owner of the land is coming on Friday with a surveyor and a cheque. Before then I want to drive the van out to the old fairground at Bearstone and leave it under the oak where we first pitched. I think the skull should be seen somewhere it doesn't have to perform. Write back if you can. I'll keep the lamp black in my coat pocket.
Love, Vera
