Geometric sphere tattoos on both calves

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the backs of two lower legs, each with a black geometric design. The left calf has a dense triangular lattice shaped like a dome or sphere, and the right calf has a similar sphere with a few bold straight lines that run up the leg and down toward the ankle. The ink is solid black with fine linework, set against a plain grey pavement and a blurred shop window.

The creel had to be finished before the tide turned, and Maud Ferrier still had forty knots to tie when Eli Pask came up the shingle at a run to say the Gannet had not rounded the point. She didn't stop her hands. Her grandmother had taught her that a net with a wrong angle in it lets the sea through, and the men out there would be steering by whatever light the village could give them.

The ball she had been making for a week sat on the bench by the boarding house steps, a sphere of tarred cord no wider than a loaf, worked in triangles so tight the lamp inside would throw its glow through a thousand small windows. Mrs Ruddock at the boarding house had paid for it in advance, three shillings and a jar of plum jam, and asked only that it be ready by dusk. Maud had asked nothing back. It was not her business why a widow wanted a lamp lit on the sea wall.

She carried it out along the wall with the wind pushing at her back. Long straight lines ran from the ball to the iron ring by the steps, the way rigging runs from a mast, and she pulled each one taut until the whole thing hummed. Out on the water a sail showed grey, then another, then the Gannet's bow lifted over the swell with its lamp dark and its crew shouting for a light to steer by.

Maud lifted the sphere high and the lattice caught the flame and laid its shadows across the waves in a pattern no sailor had seen before. The Gannet turned toward the triangles as if they were a road. When the men came up the steps, soaked and quiet, Mrs Ruddock took the lamp from her hands and hung it in the front window, where it burned every night after, and nobody in the village ever asked why the landlady's light looked like a net.
