Back view of a person's legs covered in black and grey blackwork and dotwork tattoos, with mandala motifs on the thigh and knee and a Greek key pattern on the hip.

Blackwork and dotwork leg sleeve with mandalas

Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A full leg tattoo seen from behind, combining solid black fields with fine dotwork and line shading. Mandala medallions sit above the knee and on the thigh, with Greek key bands and a dotted rosette on the upper hip, and a repeating star pattern covers the lower calf. The pattern is in black and grey throughout, and the image is framed from hip to ankle against a plain white wall.

Ioanna had been told the star would close on the ninth day, so she counted the dots as they fell from the needle, one per breath, because her master said a steady rhythm kept the hand from shaking. Eight hundred and six by noon. The rosette on the hip had taken her three weeks of mornings, and still the old man would not let her near the thigh.

"Measure it twice," he said, not looking up from his tallies. He was pressing a sheet of papyrus flat with a bronze weight shaped like a lion's paw. "A key that bends off its line is a river that forgets where it is going."

She measured. The Greek key band ran down the outer thigh in a single unbroken course, turning back on itself every hand's width, and she had learned that it could not be drawn in one stroke. It had to be walked, corner by corner, the way the old roads were walked. The mandalas came last, drawn from the centre outward, petal by petal, the lines so fine that by evening her eyes ached and the black fields between them looked like night water under a bridge.

On the final day the old man came to the bench with a pot of ink and stood a long time over the calf. The stars there repeated, one after another, down to the ankle, and where they met the floor each one was cut short by a seam only he could see. "Finish the last one," he said. "Leave the rest for whoever comes after you to find."
