Geometric line tattoo wrapping an elbow
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bare arm, seen from the side, is covered in a geometric design of thin black lines that cross and fan out from a solid black circle placed over the elbow. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the lines extend down the forearm beneath the sleeve of a white t-shirt. The plain pale wall and white fabric keep the focus on the tattoo and the skin.

The iron hoop was the last thing Dougie Renton tried to save before the tide turned, a dinner-plate ring that had torn out of the head rope of the Morag Rose in a January gale. Ellen took it from the pile by the door without asking him. She had a habit of picking up other people's ruin and deciding it was hers to mend.

She sat on an upturned fish box in the net loft with the light coming grey through the salt-crusted panes. Every bridle on the old seine was tied to that ring, and when the net was shot they fanned out from it like the spokes of a wheel, each one pulling against the next so the whole thing held its shape in the dark water. She counted them twice. Forty-two. Her father had counted them every morning for thirty years, out loud, as if the sea might steal one if he looked away.
She worked the twine through the eye of the needle and began to bind the first bridle back to the iron, knot after knot, keeping each line taut and straight so none of them crossed the wrong way. Dougie came up the stairs with two mugs and stood in the doorway, watching her hands. He did not say that the ring was past saving. He had the good sense to know she had heard it already.
By dusk the hoop hung on a nail above the loft door, the lines running out from it to the rafters and the floor and the bare bones of the walls. It looked less like a broken thing than a place where everything had been brought back in to meet. Dougie set his mug down on the bench beside her, still steaming, and left her to it.
