Geometric stag head on forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A faceted stag head with large antlers sits at the centre of the design, framed by a point at the top and layered triangles below. The linework is bold and the shading is built from dense dots and solid black areas that give the face a sculpted, angular look. The design is entirely black and grey and fills the forearm from wrist to elbow.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stag came down to the river at the hour when the customs men changed their shift, so nobody wrote down the day it crossed. Old Marta at the ford said it had antlers wider than a cart's axle and a face cut like flint, each plane dark on one side and pale on the other. She had kept the ferry for forty years and knew the borders by their animals. Foxes went through without papers. Badgers asked for nothing. Deer, she said, had a way of waiting until the guards looked away.

Piet, the younger guard on the north bank, did look away, though he told himself he was only counting the swallows under the bridge. When he looked back the stag stood in the shallows with water running round its legs, and it did not move for the length of a long breath. Then it lifted its head, and the light caught the points of its antlers and threw a triangle of shadow onto the stones, a small dark mountain that stayed where it fell.

Piet walked down to see it. He had his stamp in his pocket and a form he was supposed to fill in, and he found he had nothing to write in the box marked goods. The stag looked at him, not unkindly, the way a man looks at a clerk who has finally come to the window. Then it stepped across into the south, and the shadow came with it, and the water closed over the place where it had been standing.

In the morning Marta found the stamp on the bank, unused, the ink still wet. She put it in the till box and never asked for it back. Nobody on either side of the river ever filed a report about the stag, and the ferry kept running on the same wooden rope as before.
