Pug silhouette in geometric triangles on a calf
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A solid pug silhouette sits in a clean white circle at the centre of the design. Surrounding it, dotwork stipple fills the triangles and a row of pointed leaf shapes, while fine single lines outline the larger triangles. The image is in greyscale, with the tattoo centred and filling most of the frame.

Dough doesn't care what time it is, which is why I was up to my elbows in it at ten to four, the shutters still down and the street outside grey as dishwater. Mrs Okonedo had left the proving baskets under a damp cloth the way she always did, and the old pug, Sergeant, sat on the mat by the back door with his chin on his paws, watching me the way a foreman watches a new man.

Sergeant had been at the bakery longer than I had. He liked the warm brick of the big deck oven and would shift his bulk onto the tiles whenever the door opened, as if the heat were his due. Mrs Okonedo said he had arrived as a pup wrapped in a tea towel, and that nobody had ever managed to refuse him a crust. On the wall above the proofer hung a tin tray of rye rounds, each scored with three neat slashes and a wheat leaf pressed into every corner, the way her mother had taught her in a town I'd never heard of.
At half four the oven ticked to temperature and I slid the first batch in. The loaves rose, split along their seams and browned in patches like a stippled sky. When I turned round, Sergeant had got up and walked the length of the room to sit in the one pool of light by the bread rack, square and solid, his tail curled tight as a fist. I understood then that he was waiting for me to finish, not for food. Mrs Okonedo arrived at five with her keys and her coat half on, saw him there and said nothing, only put the kettle on for two.
We drank our tea in the blue hour while the loaves cooled, and Sergeant leaned his whole weight against my shin, the way a good dog does when it has decided you will do.
