Black fine line tattoo of a geometric star within clouds and falling dashes, ending in a faceted pendant, on the inner forearm.

Geometric star and pendant on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A geometric star with radiating lines sits beneath a cloud outline and small stars, with dashed lines descending to a faceted pendant at the bottom. The linework is fine and black, with dotted and dashed strokes forming the star's inner structure and the falling lines. The tattoo is shown in black ink on pale skin against a dark background, with the forearm running vertically through the frame.

Dear Tomas,

The glass has dropped again and Skipper Hale has stopped whistling, which tells you more than the barometer does. We are forty miles off the Dogger, the cloud came over at four like a lid being put on a pan, and I have stood at the rail with the lead line since midnight, paying out the brass weight and calling the depths to the wheelhouse in a voice I did not know I had.

The star-chart you sent is still folded in my oilskin. Mr Okonedo's octant went over the side in March, so when the cloud lets the Pole Star through we take our bearing from it, and when it does not we take our bearing from the rain. Last night the rain fell in straight dashed lines, every drop the same length, and I thought of the drawing you made for Mother's birthday: the faceted weight with a star cut into its face so the lamp would catch it. Hale laughed when I said so. Then he pressed the line into my hands and told me a sailor's daughter ought to know what the sea is made of.

At eleven fathoms the weight struck sand, grey and fine, and I brought it up and rubbed it between my fingers the way Father used to. Hale read the depth, the tide, the set of the current, and wrote them in the log in his square capitals. Then the cloud split over our heads, just a gap the width of a hand, and through it one star stood steady above the mast.

I am keeping the weight. It is in my coat pocket now, cold as a coin, and when we are home I will bring it to you so you can finish the drawing properly. Tell Mother we are coming in on Thursday's tide, and that I held the line the whole way down.
