Geometric sunflower on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A stylised sunflower with a woven or brick-like pattern in the centre and pointed petals in green, orange and red. Bold black outlines define each shape, and the petals radiate outward with a single stem curling off the lower edge. The tattoo is shown in colour on a bare arm against a plain grey wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost has got into the seed tins again, and you are prising the lids off with a butter knife while your uncle swears at the boiler in the kitchen. Out in the barn the sunflower heads hang from their nails like wrung-out sponges. Their centres are packed so tight the seeds look woven, set in rows like brickwork, and your grandmother always said you could judge a good head by that pattern alone. She said the pointed petals were for show and the weave was for keeping.

You take the bucket out across the far field after lunch. The stubble cracks under your boots and the crows lift off the fence in a black argument. Most of the stalks have gone to grey string, their petals curled and rattling, but the odd leaf still holds a little green, a little orange, the colours stubborn under the ice. At the bottom of the ditch, where the wind cannot reach, one stalk still stands with its head turned toward the low sun, untouched by the mice that have emptied everything else.

You cut it with the pruning hook and carry it back as carefully as a full jug. In the barn your uncle has already rolled up the sleeves of his coat and is hunting for a jar. He says the mice will have the rest by March, and that you should plant this one in the spring, in the bed by the gate where the frost lies longest and nothing else survives. You say nothing. You tip a few seeds from the centre into your palm and they sit there in their tidy rows, waiting for the thaw.
