Geometric fox on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A faceted fox head is tattooed on the outer forearm, built from overlapping angular planes in orange, pink, teal and black. The shading creates depth through sharp triangular shifts in tone, and the design is framed by the curve of the arm. The background shows a grey floor, a patterned fabric leg and white trainers, with the person's face not in view.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox had been living on the eleventh floor of Harrow Court since the scaffolding came down, and Mrs Okonkwo swore it was the same animal that had sat on the bins outside her flat every morning in March, watching the lift doors like it was waiting for someone to owe it money. Dev found it funny. He was the one who left the window on the landing open, and the fox came in the way foxes do, all at once and with no apology, and then sat in the middle of the carpet tiles as though it had signed the lease.

It was not an ordinary fox. Dev noticed that first in the light from the stairwell, which fell in slanted panes through the glass block wall. The fox's coat broke apart when it moved, so that its shoulder seemed made of orange planes and its ears were two sharp wedges that caught the sun, then the shadow, then the sun again. Mrs Okonkwo said it was a trick of the eye from too many nights without sleep. Dev said nothing, because he had been drawing the same shapes in the back of his sketchbook for a year and had never once seen them standing up.

On the last night the council sent the lift engineers, the fox was gone. In its place on the landing was a single teal triangle of paper, cut so exactly along its edges that Dev could not tell where the paper ended and the air began. He pinned it above the sink. Each morning after that, the light through the window fell across it and split into orange, pink and green, and he found he could not remember which of the windows had been open.
