Black and grey botanical tattoo of large flowers and leaves on an upper arm, with red, orange and turquoise geometric shapes behind them.

Large flowers with red and turquoise shapes on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large upper arm tattoo of several flowers and leaves, including a pansy-like bloom at the top and a daisy-like flower on the right. The flowers are drawn in fine hatched black and grey linework with dotted shading on the leaves, while bold red, orange and turquoise angular shapes sit behind them. The design fills the arm and is shown from the side against a brick wall.

Dear Win,

You will not believe what Mr Ardern has done to the back bedroom. He came down on Tuesday with his ink pots and asked whether he might have the garden wall for a week, and when I said the wall was damp he said damp was no trouble to him. He has spent every afternoon since copying the pansies from Mother's bed, one petal at a time, drawing every vein in grey hatching so fine it looks like rain on glass.

Last night I took up his cocoa and found the sheet pinned above the washstand. The flowers are all there, shaded grey as an old photograph, but behind them he has shaped great angled pieces of red and orange and a green-blue like the water off the pier, cut sharp as if someone had dropped a stained window and kept the bits. I asked what they were for. He said they were the weather that was there when the flowers were picked.

I told him the sea had been the wrong colour since March and he laughed and said that was why he had brought his own.

This morning the sun came through the landing window and laid a slab of red across the sheet, and for a moment the pansies looked as though they had turned to face the water. I left the cocoa going cold on the stairs and did not go in. Come at Whitsun and see it for yourself, before he takes it home.

Love, Edie
