Lotus mandala with constellation on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A circular mandala tattoo sits on the calf, built around a large teal disc crossed by thin black lines that join dots, like a star map. Overlapping yellow and coral-red circles sit at the edge of the disc, and teal lotus flowers, blue dotted petal shapes and red accents form a ring around it. The linework is bold and clean with stippled dotwork shading, and the colour is saturated and vivid.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The wrong moon was up again, a coral one sitting low over the gasworks, and Edie Padgett had her brushes out before the kettle had boiled. Sallow Bridge had a clock on its church tower that nobody had wound since the coronation, and the council had finally paid her two pounds to make its face presentable.

She had no intention of painting a plain face. Her Uncle Ambrose had kept the ornamental pond behind the almshouses and filled his notebooks with the stars that showed over it, joining the dots in black ink and pinning the sheets to the pantry door. Edie copied the largest of them onto a teal disc the width of a cartwheel, with lotus heads ringed around the rim the way he drew them on the water. When she laid the yellow and coral circles over one edge, the alderman came up the ladder in his good shoes and asked where the numbers had gone.
'The stars are the numbers,' she said, and he went down again muttering about cost. She finished the dotwork the following Thursday, stippling each petal until it looked lit from inside. That night she climbed the tower with a torch and a tin of chalk, and on the flagstones beneath the clock she drew the whole constellation again, large enough to walk.
By Saturday the schoolchildren were standing on the chalk lines, hopping from one dot to the next and calling out names they had made up. Edie watched from the lychgate with paint still under her nails, while the rain came on and washed the stars nearly away, and she found she did not mind in the least.
