Geometric symbol tattoo on a middle finger
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of the back of a hand with fingers extended, showing a small ornamental symbol tattooed across the middle finger. The design combines a diamond shape, a central cross-like form and curled line details, with a few small dots placed nearby. The fine black linework is crisp against the skin, and the soft lighting and dark background keep the focus on the finger.

The chalk marks are already fading when you reach the lamp room at Hollin Shaft, and the overman is waiting with his hands in his pockets, which tells you the cage has been held up for someone else. You don't ask who. In Hollin you learn early that questions at the head of the shaft are a kind of weight, and everyone carries enough of their own.

Old Ambrose Tull taught you the marks when you were fourteen and too thin for the heavy picks. A diamond for a roof that will hold. A cross where two drifts meet and a man can choose either way. The curled hook for water that wants to come through the seam. And dots, one for each soul sent down on the day's count, so the timber at every junction keeps a tally that the owners never bothered to read. You have carved the sign into the props of every gallery you have walked for nine years.
This morning, in the far gallery where nobody works now, you found a diamond cut into fresh wood. Somebody had been down before the shift, and beside it the water hook was already drawn, sharp and newly pale. You stood there with your lamp hissing and counted the dots out loud, though there were none to count, because the number was yours to add.
You take the stub of chalk from your breast pocket and set one dot beside the cross. Then you rub the water hook out with your thumb until only the grain of the wood remains. The cage bell sounds twice from above. You go up with the men, and when they ask what you saw down there, you tell them the roof is sound, which is true, and you keep the rest of the count to yourself.
