Fine line spiral tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a finger bearing a thin black line tattoo that curls into a spiral at the top, with small loops along the middle and a short dot beneath. The linework is clean and even, with no shading or added colour. The finger rests against a dark surface, with the rest of the hand softly out of focus at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, all of you, and mind the fire, because this is a story about a vine, and vines do not care who is warm. In the kingdom of Ysolde Vale, which is not on any map your grandmothers ever folded, there lived a stonemason's widow called Marra Penn who kept a single bean plant in a clay pot on her sill. Every morning she tied its tip to a loop of waxed thread so it had something to climb, and every morning the tip curled tighter, up and over, as if it were counting.

The lord of the vale, Osric Hale, wanted the hill behind her cottage for a new hunting ground, and he sent men with ropes and a clerk with a seal. Marra would not leave. She said the hill had a seed in it, and until the seed came up, the hill was hers. The clerk laughed and said seeds were for sparrows. Then he fell asleep in her chair, and when he woke the vine had wound round his ankle in three neat loops, and it would not be cut.

That is how the lord learned that the vine had been planted by his own grandfather, who had buried a dropped seed for luck the day the hill was given to his family. Nobody remembered it except the vine. Osric unhooked his grandfather's name from the seal that night, and the hill stayed as it was.

Now here is the last of it. If you go up there in spring you will find a single shoot coming out of a crack in the stone, curled at the top like a question mark. Do not pull it. Just leave a little water by its root, and it will tell you what it has been counting.
