Arrow symbols on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown palm-in, each with a small tattoo running along a finger. The designs are arrow-like symbols built from thin black outlines, with triangles, a circle, and a few dots. The image is monochrome, with soft lighting against a dark background, and the close framing keeps the tattoos sharp.

The fog came off Skerrow Rock the same evening my brother left the island, so I have never been able to think of one without the other. I was sixteen, the foghorn was out again, and Mam sat at the kitchen table with the old logbook open at a page I had never bothered to read.

Her bearings were drawn in the margins. Each one was an arrow standing on its own, with a ring at the heart and small triangles off the shaft like sails tacking. Beneath them she had scattered four or five dots and written in pencil: the sunk ones, keep them to port. I asked why she had never told me the marks were a map. She said I had never asked what the arrows were for, only why she bothered drawing them.
Dad had kept the light before her and taught her the trick: a bearing for every hazard, drawn small enough to fit under the day's weather. That night I climbed to the lamp alone, the glass wet and the wind leaning on the iron. I could not see the rock. I could only see the arrows in my head, pointing the way home, and I counted the dots aloud the way she had, until an engine came out of the grey, slow and unsure, and a voice called across the water asking if we were still here.
Ben was in the boat. He had got as far as the mainland and turned back, and he stepped onto the landing with his hands raw from the oars and said nothing about leaving. I wrote the bearing in the log that night, then a second one beside it, the arrow pointing at the boathouse. Some things you only need to find once.
