Geometric tattoos on a lower leg and hands
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a bent leg and foot resting on grass, with dark geometric motifs including stepped shapes, circles and a sunburst-like pattern covering the shin and ankle. Further tattoos of blocky patterns and an hourglass-like shape appear on the back of a hand and up the forearm. The bold black linework and solid fills stand out sharply against the skin and the grainy monochrome background.

Maren had kept the sun-book for the salt village of Harl since her uncle's hands began to shake. Every morning she walked the stone steps down to the sluice, counted the shadow of the chimney across the drying racks, and inked the figures in the margin beside the old sunburst printed on the cover, a ring of rays around a hollow centre. The villagers trusted the book more than they trusted the weather, which was the trouble.

The trouble came in the wet month, when the sun did not show for nine days. The fishermen wanted to know whether to sail, and the book said nothing about cloud. Her uncle, who had once watched eclipses through a pinhole in a tin lid, told her to stop looking up and start looking down. So she sat on the sluice wall with a basin of brine and watched the racks' shadows, or the lack of them, on the wet flagstones. On the ninth morning a thin gold line crossed the water at her feet and climbed the wall.
She came up the steps with her skirt soaked to the knee and told the fleet to go. The boats slid out under a sky the colour of pewter, and by noon the sun broke through behind them, sudden and white. Nobody thanked the book. They thanked Maren, which was not what she had wanted, though it was what the book would have wanted if books wanted anything.
That night she turned the cover over and drew a small hourglass beside the sunburst. Then she dragged her thumb across the glass so the sand smudged upward, the way it looked when you had been counting in the dark for a long time.
