Black and grey mandala tattoo on the lower leg above the ankle, in a black and white photo of a bare foot standing on grass.

Mandala tattoo on lower leg

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A circular mandala tattoo with fine, repeating geometric linework sits on the outer lower leg, just above the ankle. The photograph is monochrome and shows a bare foot with beaded anklets on grass, with a blurred background. The tattoo's dark ink and even detail stand out against the skin, and the subject fills the centre of the frame.

At Carrow Junction the signal wires ran so long that the old stationmaster swore they hummed the names of the dead. His niece Ada had been sent to him at nine, and by sixteen she could read a timetable faster than the clerk and tell from the rails when a train was coming before the whistle.

The trouble began the winter the 4.12 for the north failed to come back. Ada took a pair of compasses from the ticket office and a stub of chalk, and on the wet flagstones of platform two she drew a circle, then another inside it, then rings of six and twelve petals, each cut from the last with the points of the compass. Her uncle thought it nonsense. The porters walked around it. Every morning she knelt and went over the lines again so the rain could not wash them out.

On the ninth day a lamp showed at the end of the cutting, very slow, and the stationmaster came out with his hat in his hand. The engine crept in with its windows frosted over, and the driver said they had been circling a bend in the dark for nine days, always finding the same bridge and never getting past it. Each time he looked for the station lamp, he said, he had seen a pale ring on the platform instead, and it had kept him on the line.

Ada never told anyone what the pattern meant. Her uncle fixed a small brass circle above the door of the signal box, and the chalk stayed until spring, the petals fading one by one. Even now, when the north train is late, the porters say a person should stand at the centre of the circle and wait, because the line always finds its way back to the middle.
