A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Aunt Pearl had the typewriter set up on the potting bench before the frost had lifted, its keys already furred with soil, and she made me sit on an upturned crate while she fed in a sheet of carbon paper. "Two words," she said. "Nothing fancy. Nobody reads a wrist for long."

The lace came out of the tin trunk at the back of the shed, the cuffs she had crocheted the winter Grandad went into hospital, and she pinned them over the sleeves of our cardigans so we looked like two old ladies going to church after weeding. We had argued about the dahlias all summer. The beds had gone to bindweed and spite, and neither of us would admit which of us had let them go. Still, she slid her chair across so our elbows touched.

"Love goes on the left," she said, tapping it out with one finger while the bell rang at the end of the line. "Warrior on the right. That way, when we fold up like this, they read as one sentence." She pressed the fists together over the bench, knuckle to knuckle, and the carbon ink went on the wrists as neat as a postmark.

By August the bindweed had lost and so had the dahlias, but at the village fete the women at the tombola kept leaning over to read our wrists. Aunt Pearl let them. She said a sentence like that was only worth something if somebody else had to squint to make it out.
