Geometric triangle with watercolour splashes

Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo

A solid navy triangle with speckled, dotted shading sits inside a thin black outline, and offset angled lines extend to the left. Soft pink, red and teal watercolour washes bleed past the linework on either side. Black ink and colour are both prominent, and the design sits against plain, lightly lit skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been told the triangle is a survey mark, not a door, and you have stopped arguing with the crew about it. The grid on the terminal wall still shows the old sighting from the ridge above Halvorsen Basin, where the regolith turned the colour of spilt ink under the lamps. Pilot Oduya taps the glass twice and says the sensor drift is nothing, just the dust.

Dust is what the basin does. It lifts in the thin light and hangs, pink and teal where the sun catches the sulphur seams, and for four days it has refused to settle over the outline you drew at dawn. You fixed the three corners with the laser pins and marked them on the chart, then sketched the lines you could not justify: a second triangle, offset to the left, angled as if something had tried to walk away from the first and got half a metre short.

On the fifth morning the dust lies flat. You step out with the tripod and the paper map, and the solid shape you were sure of is still there, dark and speckled like a field of cold craters, but its edge is clean now. The offset lines run exactly to the rim of the ridge. Whoever plotted this basin plotted it twice, once for the mountain and once for the wind, and the second set of lines is the one that matches the survey stones.

You set the flag on the apex. Oduya asks what you will call the point. You tell her it is already named, scratched into the stone in the same angular script as the old boundary markers, and it reads only: here the ground agreed to hold still. Then the dust lifts again, and you can no longer tell which triangle you are standing in.
