Crescent moon and sun on both ankles
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare ankles rest on white bedding, with dark jeans cuffed above them. A small crescent moon sits on one ankle and a small sun with a ring and short rays sits on the other, both drawn in thin black linework. The tattoos are tiny and set against pale skin, with the soft white fabric filling most of the frame.

Dear Tobin, the harbour master has finally stopped complaining about the lamp on Gull Stair, though only because I told him it was the king's business, which it is not, and he knows it. The oil costs what it costs. I light it anyway at dusk, the way we agreed, so you can find the crescent of it when you come round the Teeth.

Your last letter came wrapped in oilcloth and tied with fishing line, with a drawing of the sun sitting too low over the salt marsh. You always drew the sun crooked. Mother says the bell in the market square has cracked, so the carters now go by my moon alone. I did not mind. Nobody asks a lamp which way it faces.
Last night the wind came off the north and I could not keep the flame steady, so I climbed the stair with the spare glass chimney in my apron pocket and sat up until the cold took my fingers. Past midnight the moon slid under a bank of cloud and for a while there was nothing on the water but the sound of it. I counted the bells from Ostry across the bay, nine of them, and waited for the sea to show me your lantern.
It did not come, and I am not ashamed to say I cried a little into the oilcloth. Then the cloud thinned and the moon was back, low over the harbour wall, pale as a coin left in a fountain. I have tied the chimney on and the stair is warm again. Come home when the tide is right, and I will keep the wick trimmed until you do.
